The Dragon Ate the Crown

In Bellweather, dragons work as licensed delivery animals. On her first day as a courier, Mina gets paired with Bruno — the only dragon in the city who refuses to fly. Ten minutes into the job, Bruno swallows the royal crown meant for that evening’s coronation. Mina has until sunset to recover it before the royal guard arrests her, while Bruno seems convinced this is the best day of his life.

Atmosphere

Sun-warmed storybook city: copper rooftops, zigzagging delivery cables, dragon-sized loading docks, royal bunting, and a sunset that turns every stone street theatrically gold.

Places that matter

  • The Skyhook Depot — a frantic courier warehouse with dragon perches, pneumatic parcel tubes, and a “
  • No Digestion Emergencies After 4 PM” board.
  • Bellweather’s Spiral Market — a steep maze of food stalls, counterfeit permits, and shortcuts that a
  • ll cost a favor.
  • The Royal Sunbridge — a ceremonial bridge being decorated for the coronation, with guards sealing it
  • tighter every hour as sunset nears.

The creator imagines

With sunset racing toward Bellweather, Mina drags crown-carrying Bruno through the Spiral Market toward a legal “voluntary surrender” remedy—only to learn it requires the dragon to genuinely want to give up the parcel. Tavi can get them there before Ode’s lockdown, but his shortcut crosses the Sunbridge and exposes Mina’s forged license. As Bruno discovers that flying would solve everything, Mina must decide whether to demand the thing he fears most, while everyone tries to keep the crown’s disastrous truth-alarm from turning a royal crisis into a citywide confession.
